The Compton & Shawford Festival Choir Christmas Concert this year celebrates some of the greatest works by Bach and Handel. It's also celebrating the appointment of its new Musical Director, Iain Cooper. Having previously been privileged to be led by John Sutton, of Voices for Hospice renown, Iain now takes the baton for the first time at this annual event.
Singing and choirs have always been at the centre of Iain's life. He began winning a choral scholarship to Bristol Cathedral. As a student in Oxford he sang in and accompanied the college choir, as well as conducting a student chamber choir and a local choral society. A succession of teaching posts followed in Peterborough and Cambridge, then examining for ABRSM and tutoring for the Open University's Music Department. Now retired, Ian and his wife moved to Winchester last July. In addition to his CSFC role, he plays violin in the Winchester Chamber Orchestra.
